Developers in Johannesburg have created Fundasmart Virtual Learning Labs. They provide virtual space for students to conduct experiments which cut costs on perishable laboratory material like chemical materials. They can share virtual simulations and resources and make these available to many users at any time. The labs are connected to a complete virtual learning environment with web resources, lectures, animated demonstrations and self-evaluation.
There is a Maths and English Laboratory, Foundation reader and Primary School Edition. This mix of 3D animations, videos and text is highly engaging to struggling learners. The site has been designed to work on mobile devices and Pcs, which means children without a laptop can still participate in the activities.
I downloaded the demo file (64 MB) of the foundation Reader product. It has English animated stories and pronunciation for Grade R and Grade 1. (Look under the products section for the link). The software is a quick demo of a range of educational features that can be made with Unity, eg matching items, read-aloud stories, audible dictionary. I started using Unity this year and found it quite easy to learn. It is a free Open Source product so educators can make their own games at home.
This design team behind Fund Smart really has a lot to offer. Their materials could be adapted for other contexts and languages. I will keep your eye on what this team develops over the next few years, as I expect some amazing results.
